In the National Australian Football (AFL) competition, each game has nine umpiring officials who act as a team to adjudicate the principles of the sport . There are three field umpires, four boundary umpires and two goal umpires. to make a successful game from their perspective, they need to work as a team during the sport . At different points within the game, the sector and boundary umpires; the sector and goal umpires and lastly the goal and boundary umpires work as small teams within the sport .

These working relationships are helped by the utilization of signals between each group to make sure the graceful running of the sport .

Initially, it's the goal umpires' responsibility to urge the team on the oval on time and to form sure each of the opposite umpires is correctly dressed and have their equipment. (Whistles, pen and report forms). Once on the sector , with the sport able to start, the sector umpires take hold .

Below may be a discussion on how each group of umpires communicate during a game.

Field to field umpires:

One umpire will begin each section of the play and control the play until it moved too distant so he hands over the play verbally by saying "Yours" to the umpire nearest the play then moves into his next position on the sector . If he wants to take care of control thanks to an interruption live he slaps his backside, usually 3 times , while the opposite umpires adjust their adjudicating position for subsequent continuation of play.

The field umpire on top of things of the play will give signals designed for the players. These could involve a play on call and signal or a sign to point a place kick and why it had been awarded.

Field and boundary umpires:

The boundary umpire rules on when the football crosses the border . He indicates this by blowing his whistle and raising his arm/s to point how the ball crossed the border .

If the ball runs over the boundary after bouncing, the boundary umpire raises his arm vertically as he blows the whistle to point the ball is out of boundary. the sector umpires blows his whistle and signals a throwing action over his head to point to the boundary umpire to throw the football back to play.

If the football flies over the border on the complete , the boundary umpires raises both arms parallel to the bottom and indicates where the ball crosses the border for the sector umpire to put the opposition player on the mark to permit a place kick to be taken by the attacking player.

If the ball goes over the border but was touched on the wing , the boundary umpire raises one arm vertically and hits his raised arm 3 times to indicated it had been touched. Then if it appear to be kicked over on the complete but came off the leg above the knee, the boundary umpire will hit his knee 3 times to point this happening.
